At Alderley Edge School for Girls, we believe that education extends beyond academic achievement. True learning encompasses emotional well-being, resilience, and personal growth. To this end, we have developed a comprehensive pastoral care system that ensures every girl feels supported, valued and empowered. Our exceptional pastoral care is designed to foster a nurturing environment where girls can thrive, both in their academic studies and in their personal lives.

A Culture of Care and Support

At the heart of our pastoral care program is a commitment to creating a culture of care and support. We understand that when girls feel emotionally and mentally supported, they are better equipped to succeed academically and socially.  We use the Girls on Board strategy to support girls as they navigate through life.

In the first instance, when parents have any concerns, they can contact their daughter’s Form Tutor and Head of Year. Being a small school, they know the girls well and will be able to speak with the girls straight away and be someone with whom they can talk. Parents are contacted within 24 hours and either an email, chat over the phone or a meeting is set up to discuss any worries. Most of the time, these initial discussions can iron out many worries, but we have a wider team including the School Nurse and Student Wellbeing Counsellor on hand for additional support should it be needed. We recognise an early approach to issues can, in many cases, stop things escalating for the girl at the heart of the matter.

School Nurse

Our on-site School Nurse plays a crucial role in our pastoral care program. Beyond addressing physical health needs, Nurse Claire is trained to recognise the interplay between physical and mental health. She provides a compassionate ear and medical expertise, ensuring that our girls receive holistic care that addresses both their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Wellbeing Initiatives -
Girls On Board

This is a strategy to support girls as they navigate their way through friendships during their school years.  It is rolled out from Year 3 to UVI and is a highly effective technique that trains girls to understand their role in decision-making around friendships so that they can deal with tricky situations.  We also support parents on a one to one basis.

Student Wellbeing Counsellor

We are proud to have a dedicated Student Wellbeing Counsellor on our team. Rachel provides confidential support to students, helping them navigate personal challenges, manage stress and develop healthy coping strategies. Whether a pupil needs help with anxiety, friendship issues, or academic pressures, our counsellor is there to offer professional guidance and support.  Support and guidance is also offered to families and a ‘team approach’ ensures that we collaborate to deliver the strategies needed to support the individual.

Mental Health First Aid Training for Teachers

Recognising the importance of mental health, we have equipped many of our teachers with Mental Health First Aid training. This specialised training enables them to identify early signs of mental health issues and provide initial support to pupils in need. Our teachers are well-prepared to listen, offer guidance and connect pupils with the appropriate resources. This proactive approach ensures that students receive timely assistance and feel safe discussing their mental health concerns.

The SEND Team

Social and emotional regulation is a core part of a pupil’s needs around learning differences.  We have a team of staff who are specialists in this department to support every girl with a learning difference.  They provide support to their families, our school staff and ensure that each pupil can maximise their potential during their time at AESG.  The SENDCO works closely with our School Nurse and Student Wellbeing Counsellor.

Wellbeing Room

We have created a dedicated Wellbeing Room, as a safe haven where girls can retreat to relax, reflect and recharge. This calming space is equipped with comfortable seating, soothing decor and resources to promote mindfulness and relaxation. It is a place where girls can take a break from the hustle and bustle of school life, practice self-care and regain their equilibrium.

Wellbeing Ambassadors in the Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form students can serve as Wellbeing Ambassadors. These ambassadors are trained to offer peer support, promote positive mental health practices and lead wellbeing initiatives within the school. They act as role models and provide a bridge between students and the pastoral care team, fostering a culture of empathy, understanding, and mutual support.

We are proud to support our girls' mental, emotional, and physical health, helping them become resilient, compassionate, and confident individuals ready to make a meaningful impact on the world.
